- Beginning of the First Punic War . The trigger is the crisis surrounding the Mamertines in Messina : this mercenary troop was besieged by Hieron II of Syracuse and turned to Carthage and Rome for help. Many Roman senators are initially against intervening, especially since a Mamertine rebellion in Rhegium had been put down a few years earlier and Carthage seized the opportunity to intervene first; the general Hanno succeeds in occupying Messina. The consul Appius Claudius Caudex convinced the Romans to dare to go to war. The Romans land in Messina and drive the Carthaginians out of the city. From there the first advances against Syracuse , which is allied with Carthage, are made.
