Western Mediterranean
- Spring: In the First Punic War , the Roman fleet under Marcus Atilius Regulus and Lucius Manlius Vulso Longus in the battle of Cape Ecnomus off the south coast of Sicily (in which over 300 ships take part on both sides) a victory over the Carthaginians under Hamilkar Barkas and Hanno . This clears the way for Roman troops to land in Africa .
- Marcus Atilius Regulus lands with a force in North Africa and begins the siege of Aspis . After a few weeks the Romans conquer the city and make it the starting point for further operations.
- The Carthaginians recall their general Hamilcar from Sicily. While a large part of the Roman fleet under Lucius Manlius Vulso Longus returns to Rome, the landing army under Marcus Atilius Regulus remains in Africa and devastates the area there.
- In the Battle of Adys , the Romans succeed for the first time in a victory on African soil. Then they march towards Carthage , where they take winter quarters near Tunis .
- The Carthaginians ask the Romans for peace. Their general Marcus Atilius Regulus demands such harsh conditions (withdrawal from Sardinia and Sicily , payment of tributes) that the Carthaginians continue the fight.

- In China , the Zhou dynasty is destroyed when the Qin State army occupies the capital Luoyang .
- As a result of the attack and the subsequent annexation by the Chu state at the time of the Warring States , the Chinese state of Lu - the home of the philosopher Confucius around 250 years earlier - goes under.
