First Punic War
- Battle of Tunes ( Tunis ): The Carthaginians achieve a devastating victory against the Roman troops that have landed in Africa not far from their capital. The Carthaginian troops are led by the Spartan general Xanthippos , the Roman by Marcus Atilius Regulus , who is taken prisoner.
- Early summer: the remains of the Roman landing army are saved on their ships. An attack by the Carthaginian fleet can be repulsed in front of the Hermaeic promontory, but 284 ships are lost in a storm off Camarina . As a result, the Romans were forced to forego sea operations over the next few years, and the war shifted back to Sicily .
- The Carthaginians plunder agricultural property .
