- January 29 : Ptolemy III. Euergetes I becomes King of Egypt as the successor to Ptolemy II Philadelphus.
- Antiochus II breaks this in the peace treaty with Egypt in 253 BC. He entered into a marriage alliance with the Egyptian king's daughter Berenike the Younger and returned to his first wife, Laodike . When Antiochus dies in the same year (in August) (possibly poisoned by Laodike), Laodike declares her 19-year-old son Seleukos II to be the new king of the Seleucid Empire , against the claims of the son of Berenike. This becomes the occasion for the Third Syrian War between the Seleucid Empire and Egypt. The Egyptian king Ptolemy III. lands in Antioch in Syria and also wins the coast of Cilicia ; his troops advance to Mesopotamia. Berenike the younger is found murdered by him.
- According to tradition, Ptolemy III sacrificed. Mrs. Berenike II. Her head hair in the Arsinoe Temple, in order to ask for the safe return of her husband from the war. This is the origin of the legend about the constellation Haar der Berenike .
- Egypt regains sovereignty over Cyrene . In the Aegean Sea, Ptolemy conquered the city of Ephesus .
