The Äußere Knorrkogel ( 2920  m above sea level ), also known as the Äußerer Knorrkogl , is a mountain peak in the Gschlößkamm of the Venediger Group in the north of East Tyrol (municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol ).

Location and promotion opportunities

The Äußere Knorrkogel is a small rock horn in the center of the Gschlößkamm between the Inner Knorrkogel ( 2882  m above sea level ) in the west and the Wildenkogel ( 3021  m above sea level ) in the east. The Outer Knorrkogel is separated from the Inner Knorrkogel by the Knorrscharte ( 2771  m above sea level ), from the Wildenkogel by the western summit of the Wildenkogel ( 2952  m above sea level ). The Karleskees stretches between the Inner and Outer Knorrkogel in the north, and the Knorrkees between the Outer Knorrkogel and Wildenkogel.

The normal ascent to the Äußere Knorrkogel is via the Lackach Lake District, which can be reached either from the Matreier Tauernhaus via the Wildenkogelweg and Wildenkogelscharte or from the Badener Hütte and the Venediger Höhenweg . Then the ascent is pathless via Schrofen and in a Schrofen gully to the summit ( UIAA I ). A ridge crossing from the Inner Knorrkogel is also an option for climbing the mountain, whereby the transition from the Inner Knorrkogel takes place over partly stacked blocks to the Knorrscharte and in the north past the ridge towers overhanging south to the summit ( UIAA II ). Another variant is the southwest ridge from the Knorrscharte. For the first ascent of the Outer Knorrkogel, K. Bröckelmann and F. Köll used the southwest flank to reach the Inner Knorrkogel on the same day by crossing the ridge. W. Teufel first ascended the southwest ridge in 1896.
