Åmmebergs järnväg (ÅJ) was a Swedish railway line between Åmmeberg and Zinkgruvan in Hammars socken in Närke . The 11 km long, standard-gauge line with a track width of 1435 mm had no connection to the rest of the Swedish railway network.
history
The Belgian company Vieille Montagne acquired the mines at the Isåsen settlement with Övre and Nedre Knalla and the current zinc mine in 1857 . The company received permission to build a railway between the Åmmeberg enrichment facility and the Isåsen zinc mine on February 2, 1858, and began construction in the late 1850s. The line was opened to private traffic on June 1, 1863 and cost 413,000 riksdalers. Buildings and vehicles were bought for 130,000 riksdalers.
The railway with the name Åmmeberg – Vetterns jernväg was granted permission for public freight transport on April 23, 1889. For the branch line to Knallagruvan a concession was granted on January 27, 1888. It was opened on April 23, 1889.
The original rails were made of iron with a meter weight of 26.5 kg / m and were completely replaced in 1897 by steel rails with a weight of 31.5 kg / m.
The processed products from the enrichment plant were not transported by rail, but by ship from the port in Åmmeberg via the Göta Canal to the port of Hisingen in Gothenburg .

Ore wagon
In 1889 the company had 30 ore wagons in stock. The cars were unbraked and a brake car was carried on the train. In the mid-1960s, Hilding Carlssons Mekaniska Verkstad built six two-axle ore wagons with an automatic Willison clutch .
Shutdown
The traffic between Knalla and Zinkgruvan ended in 1970, the rails were demolished in 1973.
The zinc enrichment plant, which was put into operation in 1977, required a lot of water. To make room for the construction of a water pipeline, ore transport by rail between Zinkgruvan and Åmmeberg was stopped on July 12, 1975. The line was torn down in the same year and this water pipe was built on the embankment.
Current condition
After the opening of the new enrichment plant, the enriched zinc ore was transported to Otterbäcken by truck . The zinc ore has been loaded onto ships there since the mid-1960s.
In Åmmeberg, a footpath has been laid on part of the route.
