As interim commander of the Algerian province, he subjugated Kabylia , the area of the Auris Mountains (a high mountain landscape in the area of the Atlas massif ) and in 1849 conquered Zaatcha

On his return to France he was promoted to Général de division in 1851 . During the Crimean War , on August 16, 1855, he successfully commanded the French troops in the Battle of Traktir against the Russians.

After the peace agreement he was appointed as a member of the “Comité consultatif de l'infanterie” and in 1859 was transferred to the military command in Genoa .

In addition to other awards, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1855.

In 1863 he was appointed "Senator of the Second Empire " (Sénateur du Second Empire).
