Ecological protection station Steinhuder Meer eV in Winzlar

The Ecological Protection Station Steinhuder Meer (ÖSSM) is a regional nature conservation organization on the Steinhuder Meer based in Rehburg-Loccum .

history

The association was founded in 1991 in order to bring together the hitherto active conservationists who were organized in various conservation groups ( NABU , BUND , Faunistische AG) for reasons of efficiency. In 1992, with financial support from the state, the association bought a rest yard in the Rehburg-Loccum district of Winzlar , which it expanded according to historical and ecological aspects with the help of many volunteers and created office and exhibition rooms there. In 1994, the state of Lower Saxony commissioned the ÖSSM to look after the protected areas around the Steinhuder Meer. Since then, the association has been monitoring various animal and plant species, observing the development of habitats and drawing up expert reports and development plans. The employees and volunteers also conduct numerous tours, publish specialist articles, leaflets and look after the exhibition in the house. Since autumn 2004, an expanded, former stable building has provided additional space for seminars and children's activities. The ÖSSM is affiliated with the Regional Environmental Education Center (RUZ) Steinhuder Meer .

Since 1991, the ÖSSM has been bundling the voluntary nature conservation work at Steinhuder Meer and coordinating activities, among other things with the help of the station table , which meets several times a year , in which the responsible lower nature conservation authorities ( districts of Nienburg and Schaumburg as well as the Hanover region ) and representatives of the state of Lower Saxony participate. The cooperation with schools was greatly expanded with the aim of introducing the pupils to the environment of the Steinhuder Meer.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ÖSSM in 2011, z. B. Lower Saxony Environment Minister Hans-Heinrich Sander personally to the association "for the constructive attitude in the new version of the Steinhuder-Meer-Ordinance". Regional president Hauke Jagau , the district administrator of the Schaumburg district Jörg Farr and members of the Bundestag Katja Keul , Caren Marks and Sebastian Edathy also appeared in person.

In 2016, the ÖSSM has six full-time employees (three biologists, two geographers and one landscape ecologist), two participants in the Federal Voluntary Service and two participants in the Voluntary Ecological Year . The care area has expanded over the years. Today, the station carries out nature conservation measures between Nienburg in the north and Rinteln in the south and between the Weser in the west and the A7 north-east of Hanover . The employees specialize in the development and implementation of species protection and moor protection measures . The professional competence of the association is now known far beyond the nature conservation work on the Steinhuder Meer.

In September 2016 the new exhibition was published in the station building of the ÖSSM. It is entitled "Nature in View - an exhibition on biodiversity at the Steinhuder Meer" and is intended to inform visitors and interested parties about the fauna and flora at the Steinhuder Meer. In addition, the station's website has been completely revised and given a new design.

activities

The protection station looks after the nature reserves (NSG) with a size of 2,500 ha around the Steinhuder Meer on behalf of the state of Lower Saxony . As an FFH area , the Steinhuder Meer also belongs to the European Natura 2000 system of protected areas . In addition to monitoring rare animal and plant species, employees plan habitat improvement measures for endangered animals, which are then implemented in cooperation with various authorities and nature conservation associations. For example, the ÖSSM has now built over 150 small bodies of water to protect amphibians and other water-bound animal species. The establishment of special aids for ospreys has resulted in around a third of all ospreys in Lower Saxony breeding at Steinhuder Meer. With the help of a resettlement project for the tree frog , the rare animal species on the Steinhuder Meer could be made at home again from 2005. Today, the local one population the largest in Lower Saxony. The crucian carp had the goal of one of many other successful species protection projects . The species, which has become rare, lives again today at the Steinhuder Meer, in many waters that were planned and built by the ÖSSM.

In 2010 the protection station initiated a resettlement project for the European mink with the support of the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment and Climate Protection . The station was also commissioned by the State Environment Ministry of Lower Saxony to record the stocks of wild cats and otters in the region. The station also prepares environmental impact studies, carries out species protection assessments and develops nature conservation projects for third parties.
