The Raunheim Oil Harbor Bridge is a 170 meter long bicycle and pedestrian bridge that opened in 2014 on the banks of the Main in Hesse . The bridge stands on the boundary of the Raunheim municipality , which belongs to the southern Main district of Groß-Gerau and is the owner of the bridge. The building designed by the Frankfurt architects Schneider + Schumacher leads over a helical ramp over the Raunheim oil port on the left bank of the Main. The port with its attached tank farm is a transshipment point for inland shipping for fuel to supply the neighboring Frankfurt airport . The bridge has been the recipient of the German Urban Development Prize and other awards since the year it was opened .

History and function

The Raunheim oil port consists of a single port basin on the orographically left , geographically southern bank of the Main. Mainly tankers operate in the port and unload their cargo there with the neighboring tank farm at Frankfurt Airport as their destination. From 1965 until the opening of the Ölhafenbrücke , the footpaths and bicycle paths on the left bank of the Main (see below, section transport links ) were arched around the port area, including the tank farm, which was not accessible to the public.

After around a year of construction, the oil port bridge was opened to traffic in May 2014. The engineering company Schüßler-Plan was responsible for the project planning ; the construction costs amounted to around five million euros. Because of the extremely flammable hazardous substances stored in the port, there were particularly high protection and safety requirements for planning, design and construction of the bridge.

The construction of the reinforced concrete girder bridge over the 70 meter wide port entrance separates the transport of dangerous goods by water from the crossing of bicycle and pedestrian traffic for safety reasons and without restricting the flow of traffic. On the one hand, tankers passing the port entrance of the oil port are to be protected from a possible fire hazard from passers-by on the bridge ("ignition source entry" - for example carelessly thrown away, smoldering cigarettes). On the other hand, the construction of the bridge is intended to protect passers-by from the consequences of any accidents in the port area. Smoking is prohibited on the bridge , as indicated by information boards and traffic signs in front of both access ramps.

Awards

  • The design of the Ölhafenbrücke was honored in October 2014 by the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning with a special prize from the German Urban Development Award.
  • Also in 2014, the municipalities of Rüsselsheim , Raunheim and Kelsterbach involved in the project, as well as the NH ProjektStadt initiative, received an award from the Hessian Ministry of Economics in the state competition Ab in die Mitte for their cooperation in the planning of the bridge.
  • 2014 design award from the Wüstenrot Foundation
  • Badge Hessian State Initiative for Building Culture
  • German Steel Construction Prize 2014

Transport links

Several bicycle hiking trails of regional and supraregional importance lead across the bridge, at this point the same route. These include sections of the regional park route of the RheinMain regional park , the route of the industrial culture Rhein-Main Hessischer Unterer Main , the Main cycle path and the Hessian cycle path R3 . For public road traffic, the bridge can only be reached and crossed on foot or by bike. By dispensing with stairs, the building is barrier-free , slopes have been reduced by the helical construction of the eastern of the two bridge ramps.
