At the age of 17 she was discovered by director Trần Anh Hùng and invited to take part in his film production A Summer in Hanoi . In the film released in 2000, she appeared alongside actors such as Trần Nữ Yên Khê or Nguyễn Như Quỳnh , both of whom had already appeared in front of the camera for Trần Anh Hùng. During this production she also met her future husband Ngô Quang Hải . In the same year she also appeared in Vũ khúc con cò , a Singaporean production by the Vietnamese Nguyễn Phan Quang Bình and the Singaporean Jonathan Foo , in the role of Hoai . The film was subsequently awarded as “Best Feature Film” at the Milano Film Festival and nominated for a “Grand Prix” at the Festival du Film de Paris in 2003 . In 2002 Hải Yến became the leading and currently (2015) most successful actress in her country when she was cast in the female lead alongside Sir Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser in The Silent American from over 2,000 applicants . This was also the first time in Vietnamese history that a Vietnamese actress was hired for an English-speaking character in a Hollywood film. The film, directed by Phillip Noyce , in which she played the role of Phuong , has been shown at various film festivals, has received multiple nominations and awards, and at the 2003 Oscars was even awarded an Oscar in the category “ Best Actor ” (for Michael Caine) nominated. Hải Yến himself was nominated at the Satellite Awards 2002 for a Satellite Award in the category “ Best Supporting Actress (Drama) ”. In the German version of the film, her character was spoken by Minh-Khai Phan-Thi , who is also of Vietnamese origin .

In 2005 she took on the lead and title role of Pao in Chuyện của Pao , her first purely Vietnamese film, which was also produced by her husband Ngô Quang Hải, who made his feature film debut . In the multi-award-winning film, which was submitted as Vietnam's representative in the nomination for the " Oscar for the best foreign language film ", but was not nominated, she plays a young Hmong in search of her mother. For this engagement she was further awarded a Golden Kite by the Vietnam Cinematography Association in the category "Best Lead Actress" (2006) and in 2007 she received a Golden Lotus for "Best Lead Actress" at the Vietnam Film Festival . At the Busan International Film Festival 2006 she was mentioned in the curtain call as one of the best contemporary Asian actresses. In this production, however, she not only appeared as an actress, but as a film producer was primarily responsible for the financing, as well as the distribution and distribution of the film. The film Chơi vơi , presented at various festivals, received further nominations and awards and was considered one of the best films of the Vietnamese film year 2008 and 2009.

In 2010, Hải Yến again entered into a collaboration with director Nguyễn Phan Quang Bình, this time in his film Cánh đồng bất tận , another adaptation of the novel based on Nguyễn Ngọc Tưs work of the same name from 2006. Side by side with Dustin Nguyen and the a little younger Tăng Thanh Hà she played the attractive prostitute Suong . Like the films in which she was previously involved, Cánh đồng bất tận was shown at various film festivals and received various nominations and awards. At the Vietnamese International Film Festival , another important Vietnamese film festival in addition to the aforementioned Vietnam Film Festival , Hải Yến was named “Best Actress” in the same year; Dustin Nguyen received the award for "Best Actor". In the following years it became largely quiet about the actress, who was only represented in a well-known film production again in 2015.
