β-Acetyldigoxin is a cardiac glycoside derived from digoxin , a chemical compound found in species of thimble .

properties

β-Acetyldigoxin is the β-acetyl derivative of digoxin or lanatoside C from Digitalis lanata and acts pharmacologically as a prodrug . It is completely deacetylated in the cells of the intestinal mucosa and is only present as digoxin in the systemic blood circulation. β-Acetyldigoxin has a higher bioavailability than digoxin. At the heart causes a digoxin

increased contraction force and speed (positive inotropic effect)

Decrease in heart rate (negative chronotropic effect)

Delay in conduction of excitation (negative dromotropic effect)

increased excitability, especially in the area of the ventricular muscles (positive bathmotropic effect).

5–10% of digoxin is metabolized in the liver and around 80% is excreted unchanged via the kidneys; it is assumed that P-glycoprotein is involved in the excretion process.

Β-Acetyldigoxin is used in the treatment of manifest chronic heart failure and permanent or seizure atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter .
