family

The first named smock was an electoral fruit knife that came to Aschaffenburg in the wake of the elector-archbishop Johann Schweikhard von Kronberg (1604–1626). The grandfather Reinhard Kittel acquired the house in Löhergraben 8 from Hofsattler Mötzel, which he passed on to his son Franz Anton, who was married to Margaretha Dölger from Obernau .

The ranger and timber merchant Franz Anton Kittel and his second wife Elisabeth, née Wilhelm, came from Heusenstamm in the Offenbach district , were the parents of Martin Balduin Kittel, whose house was at Löherstrasse 8. He attended elementary school and later high school in his hometown. He earned his school fees as a private tutor, he gave private lessons to the sons of respected middle-class families. He was tutor to the son of the clerk's widow Scheurer, whose books he also kept because she ran a wine trade . In 1816 he graduated from high school, he pursued philosophical studies and matriculated in 1819 at the University of Würzburg .

On October 22, 1838, he married Wilhelmine Hulda Minette Leske (1819–1842). Wilhelmine Hulda was the daughter of the bookseller Karl Wilhelm Leske from Darmstadt and through her sister Theone Georgine Julie Gertraude Emilie the sister-in-law of Carl Ludwig Krebs, bookseller in Aschaffenburg. Their daughter Petra Katharina Kittel was born in 1839.

Working life

He studied medicine in Munich and received his doctorate in 1822 with the grade "eminens" (German: excellent). A scholarship from King Ludwig I of Bavaria allowed him to study natural sciences at the Sorbonne in Paris .

He also obtained a doctorate in philosophy . On November 9, 1826, he received the revocable permission to hold philosophical lectures at Munich University. In 1831 he became a professor of natural sciences at the Aschaffenburg Lyceum, where he taught until it was closed in 1873. From 1834 to 1869 he was the rector of the newly established royal agricultural and trade school in Aschaffenburg. He was an excellent geologist and botanist . He had brought together minerals from Germany and France into an extensive and scientifically recognized collection, which he later donated to the natural history cabinet in Munich. The local historian Kittel also dealt with art history. In seventeen annual programs of the vocational school, he published the buildings and works of art in Aschaffenburg in words and pictures.

In the 1830s he created the first geological map of Aschaffenburg and its surroundings.

In 1868 he received the title of councilor from the Bavarian King Ludwig II .

He created, in the form of index cards , the so-called "Kittel'sche collection of notes" about events in art, culture and history in Aschaffenburg and its surrounding area. For his collection on local history, Kittel drew from a large pool of sources that are no longer available to this extent for various reasons (losses over time due to war events, etc.). The biggest problem is that in most cases no sources are given. It can hardly be traced any more from which archival material he gathered his various information. The “Kittel'sche Zettelsammlung” can therefore no longer be considered as a serious source, but it provides valuable information on historical events and their connections.

He wrote books and essays, especially specialist literature. As a doctor, the doctor of medicine never practiced.

Councilor Dr. Martin Balduin Kittel's life was characterized by modesty and loyalty to home. The talented and versatile scientist died on July 24, 1885 and was buried in the old town cemetery in Aschaffenburg.

The city of Aschaffenburg named a street after him in 1903.
