(118173) Barmen is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen on April 11, 1991 at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033).

The orbit of the asteroid was secured in 2005 so that numbering could be assigned. (118173) Barmen was named after the Barmen district of Wuppertal at the suggestion of Freimut Börngen . The choice fell on Barmen because of the Barmen Theological Declaration of 1934. The asteroid was named on November 9, 2006. Börngen named a number of asteroids after Protestant themes, for example (118178) Rinckart after Martin Rinckart and (120481) Johannwalter after Johann Walter .
