(12607) Alcaeus is an asteroid of the central main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The asteroid was named on November 24, 2007 after Alkaios of Lesbos , an ancient Greek poet and next to his contemporary Sappho the most important exponent of Aeolian lyrical poetry . He belongs to the Alexandrian canon of the nine lyric poets . Alcaeus is the Latinized spelling of the name Alkaios . The asteroid of the main inner belt (80) Sappho is named after Sappho .
