(2086) Newell ( 1966 BC ; 1931 UM ; 1951 AJ 1 ; 1957 TD ; 1972 XG ) is an asteroid of the main inner belt belonging to the Vesta family and discovered on January 20, 1966 at the Goethe Link Observatory .

designation

The asteroid was named after Homer E. Newell (1915–1983), one of NASA's most important organizers . He was a member of the advisory committee that was set up to found NASA in 1958 and was one of the first NASA employees. Until his retirement in 1973 he was a senior staff member at NASA. Frank K. Edmondson suggested Newell as the namesake.
