(2173) Maresjev is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on August 22, 1974 by the Ukrainian - Soviet astronomer Lyudmyla Shuravlowa at the Crimean Observatory .
The asteroid was named after the Soviet fighter pilot and veteran of the Great Patriotic War Alexei Petrovich Maressjew , who is also the protagonist in the Russian opera The Story of Real Man .
