June 1965 by the American astronomer Arnold R. Klemola at the astronomical facility Leoncito in the El Leoncito National Park ( IAU code 808). The asteroid belongs to the Eos family, a group of asteroids named after (221) Eos .
designation
(2179) Platzeck was named after Ricardo Pablo Platzeck , director of the Observatorio Astronómico de Córdoba , the Córdoba Institute of Mathematics and the Balseiro Institute ( Universidad Nacional de Cuyo ). He played an important role in the completion of the 1.5 meter Bosque Alegre telescope in Bosque Alegre in 1941.
