designation

(2196) Ellicott was named after the American astronomer Andrew Ellicott Douglass (1867–1962), who is considered the founder of dendrochronology . From 1894 to 1901 he was assistant to the astronomer Percival Lowell (after whom the asteroid (1886) Lowell was named), taught in Tucson from 1906 and was director of the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona (IAU code 692) from 1923 to 1937 . The name was suggested by the American astronomer Frank K. Edmondson .
