designation

(2275) Cuitlahuac was named after Cuitláhuac , the tenth ruler of the Aztecs , who ruled for a short time in 1520. He was the brother of his predecessor Moctezuma II (asteroid (2272) Montezuma ). He had been released from captivity by the conquistador Hernán Cortés to negotiate a dispute, after which he gathered the Aztecs to fight the Spanish. After fierce fighting in which thousands of Aztec warriors were killed, he drove Cortes out of the city with the loss of over half of his men and all of his treasures. Within a few months, Cuitláhuac and thousands of his compatriots died of smallpox : they had been infected by a Spanish soldier.
