(277) Elvira is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt that was discovered on May 3, 1888 by Auguste Charlois at the Observatory of Nice . It is probably named after a figure in Alphonse de Lamartine's Méditations poétiques (1820) and Harmonies poétiques et religieuses (1830).
(277) Elvira moves at a distance of 2.6307 ( perihelion ) to 3.1425 ( aphelion ) astronomical units in 4.9043 years around the sun . The orbit is 1.1556 ° inclined to the ecliptic , the orbital eccentricity is 0.0886.
(277) Elvira is 27 kilometers in diameter. It has a light surface with an albedo of 0.277. It rotates on its own axis in around 29 hours and 41 minutes.
It belongs to the Koronis - asteroid family , a group of asteroids that after (158) Koronis is named.
A group of astronomers, including Lucy d'Escoffier Crespo da Silva and Richard P. Binzel , used observations from 1998 to 2000 to determine the spin-vector alignment of these asteroids, including (277) Elvira. The joint work resulted in the development of 61 new individual rotating light curves to complement previously published observations.
Measurements of the thermal inertia of (277) Elvira gave a value of approx. 190 J / (m 2 · K 1 · s 1/2 ) compared to a value of 50 for lunar regolith and 400 for coarse sand in an environment with one atmosphere.
