(32809) Sommerfeld is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on October 10, 1990 by the German astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .
The asteroid was named after the German mathematician and physicist Arnold Sommerfeld (1868–1951), who is one of the creators of modern theoretical physics and whose so-called Sommerfeld School of Theoretical Physics strongly influenced the development of their science.
