(3887) Gerstner is an asteroid of the main belt , of August 22, 1985 by the Czech astronomers Antonin Mrkos on kleť observatory ( IAU code 046) in Bohemia was discovered.
The asteroid was named after the Bohemian physicist and mathematician Franz Josef von Gerstner (1756-1832), who initially worked as an astronomer at the Vienna observatory and from 1784 at the Prague observatory before turning to mathematics from 1787.
The asteroid also honors his son Franz Anton von Gerstner (1796–1840), who in 1824 implemented the Budweis - Linz railway connection designed by his father from 1807 in the form of the Budweis – Linz horse-drawn railway .
