(43844) Rowling is an asteroid of the main middle belt discovered by the American astronomer Mark Hammergren on July 25, 1993 at the Manastash Ridge Observatory ( IAU code 664) near Ellensburg , Washington state . Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already occurred on August 22nd and 23rd, 1979 under the provisional designation 1979 QJ 3 at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .

(43844) Rowling was named on April 13, 2006 at the suggestion of Mark Hammergren after the British writer Joanne K. Rowling , who is best known for her Harry Potter novels .
