(4798) Mercator is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 26 September 1989 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory ( IAU code was discovered 809).

The asteroid was named after the Flemish mathematician and cartographer Gerhard Mercator , who became known as the creator of globes and world maps ( Mercator projection ).
