(5017) Tenchi is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 18 February 1977 by the Japanese astronomer Hiroki Kosai and Kiichiro Furukawa at the Kiso Observatory ( IAU code 381) in Kiso at Mount Ontake was discovered.

The asteroid is a member of the Hanskya family, a group of asteroids named after (1118) Hanskya .

It was named after Tenji (626-676), the 38th Tennō , who in 660 created the first water clock ( Klepsydra ) in Japan.
