(5374) hokutosei is an asteroid of the main belt , on 4 January 1989 by the Japanese astronomer Masayuki Yanai and Kazuro Watanabe at the observatory of Kitami ( IAU code was discovered 400).

It was named after the Hokutosei ( Japanese 北斗星 , dt. " Big Car "), a luxurious sleeper train that connects the cities of Sapporo and Tokyo and covers the 1000 km distance in a journey time of 16 hours.
