(6961) Ashitaka is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 26 May 1989 by the Japanese astronomer Makio Akiyama and Toshimasa Furuta at the observatory in Mishima ( IAU code 886) in Shizuoka Prefecture was discovered.

The asteroid was named after the dormant Ashitaka volcano near Numazu in Shizuoka Prefecture.
