(7649) Bougainville is an asteroid of the main central belt that was discovered on September 22, 1990 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 046) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .

It was named on March 9, 2001 after the French officer, navigator and writer Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729–1811), who was the first French to circumnavigate the world from 1766–1769 .
