The former church of Saint-Pierre in Dontilly, a district of the municipality of Donnemarie-Dontilly in the Seine-et-Marne department in the French region of Île-de-France , dates back to a Romanesque church from the 11th century, which was built in the 13th and 13th centuries 16th century was expanded. In 1930, the church consecrated to the Apostle Peter was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique . The building, in which there are no longer any services, is used for cultural events.

history

It is believed that there was a castle on the hill in the Middle Ages. The Saint-Pierre church may have served as a castle chapel before it became part of a recollect monastery. In 1589 it became the parish church of Dontilly, a formerly independent parish that was merged into the parish of Donnemarie-Dontilly in 1967.

Exterior construction

The bell tower, which was built in three phases, rises up on the west facade. In the substructure of the tower, which is dated to the early 11th century, a round arch portal opens. The middle part, which was created between 1080 and 1000, is provided with narrow, loopholes-like openings. The upper storey of the tower, which dates from the first half of the 12th century, is broken through on all four sides by round-arched twin arcades.

The nave was built from 1550. It has three naves and is divided into four bays . The central nave is covered with an open roof structure, the side aisles have ribbed vaults that are decorated with carved keystones . Keys can be seen on one keystone and the Lamb of God on another . The main nave and the two side aisles are separated from each other by ogival arcades , which rest on mighty pillars and set columns with capitals .

The polygonal choir dates from the early 13th century. It is illuminated by five large, two-lane windows and nine smaller round windows. In the choir, a piscina, framed by two set columns and spanned by a three-pass arch, is built into the wall.

Leaded glass window

In the choir there are still three stained glass windows from the 19th century, on which God the Father and Jesus with the cross are shown in the middle , John the Baptist and a Madonna with the baby Jesus on the left . The window on the right-hand side shows the apostles Peter and Paul , next to the name of the founder in the lower field the year 1861 can be read.
