(8861) Jenskandler is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on October 3, 1991 by the German astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) near the village of Tautenburg in Thuringia .

The asteroid was named on December 8, 1998 after the German amateur astronomer Jens Kandler (* 1973), who has been observing the sky in Drebach at the local observatory since he was 14 years old .
