(9473) Ghent is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 26 July 1998 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered.
The asteroid was named after the Belgian city of Ghent , the capital of the province of East Flanders and the arrondissement and electoral district of the same name , which became one of the first industrialized cities on mainland Europe towards the end of the 18th century .
