1-Butyne can be obtained by reacting ethyne with a haloethane (e.g. bromoethane ).

1-Butyne is a highly flammable gas which forms explosive mixtures with air or oxygen over a wide range of concentrations. Due to its triple bond , 1-butyne is very reactive. So it will readily add halogens . 1-Butyne has a narcotic effect in higher concentrations.
