The 1st Women's Football Club Leoben is an Austrian women's football club from Leoben in Styria .

history

Founding history and first years

The club was founded by Sonja Pohland in 1976, at a time when women's football in Austria was almost exclusively concentrated in the federal states of Vienna and Lower Austria . Under the direction of Johann Pernsteiner, the Leoben women's team soon acted as a counterweight to LUV Graz , the only strong club in Styria at the time.

In the game year 1978/79 Leoben took part for the first time in the women's league east, organized by the Vienna Football Association , which was then considered the top Austrian level and was able to place itself in seventh and penultimate place ahead of ESV Parndorf . In the first few years, the Obersteierrinnen found it difficult to compete with the strong Viennese clubs, but after a last place in the table in 1980, the team and the style of play of the Leoben women gradually improved, making the young club in 1985 - only its tenth year in existence - already on the fourth place in the table and only three points behind the then master Ostbahn XI .

Championship honors and three cup finals

The 1. DFC Leoben achieved its greatest successes in the following two game seasons, in which the club was crowned Austrian women's football champion unbeaten . In the 1985/86 season , the Leobnerinnen worked out a goal difference of 35 shot to only 12 goals received in fourteen games and placed themselves in first place with five points ahead of the equally surprisingly strong local rivals LUV Graz. In the 1986/87 game year Leoben defended the championship title with a four-point lead over the top club Union Kleinmünchen . The strength of the Styrian football ladies can also be seen from the goal difference of 44 goals scored to only ten goals received. In the same season, 1. DFC Leoben played their first time in the final of the cup competition , but narrowly missed their first double win with a 1: 2 defeat against Union Landhaus .

The following years brought the club consistently good positions in the championship, but it was no longer enough for a place at the top. In 1990 they were able to reach the final again in the cup competition, but lost to SC Brunn am Gebirge 1: 2. In the championship, the club slowly drifted into midfield until the mid-1990s and more and more towards the bottom of the table towards the end of the decade. A ray of hope showed in the 1999/2000 season with the third entry into the cup final. After good games against Stattersdorf (4: 4 and 5: 3 n.E.), Hellas Kagran (7: 0) and Süd-Ost (2: 0), this one was also lost 3: 5 against Union Landhaus.

First descent and reassignment

After the management of the club was handed over to Hubert Greimer in 2001, it set a severe setback for the women's club from Leoben with the first relegation from the women's Bundesliga in the 2002/03 season . In the 2nd Division South, the 1st DFC Leoben scored the most goals in the league with 128 goals, but had to tremble until the end about being promoted to the top division. At the end of the season, however, the record goal ratio of 128: 12 was the decisive factor against the equal points rival from Sankt Ruprecht, with whom they dominated the league together (the gap of the third-placed was 21 points).

Although the Bundesliga season 2004/05 started with strong ambitions , relegation to the second performance class was waiting again in the end. In 2005/06 the women from Leoben competed again with the women of the DFC St. Ruprecht for the promotion place and finally won the championship title of the 2nd division again with a five point lead. After the club was able to prevail in the relegation games against the Eastern League champion SV Horn with 3: 1 and 0: 1, after a year of abstinence from the Bundesliga, the Leoben played again in the ÖFB Women's League in the 2006/07 season . The playoff was introduced here for the first time. Furthermore, the departure of some players could not be coped with, and so the women of Leoben could only fight for two points, which meant relegation to the 2nd women's league south. Since the squad was very small, discussions were held with some women's clubs to increase the squad for the 2008/2009 season. An agreement was reached with FC Kammern, and a second team was even reported. After the Leobnerinnen were at the top of the table after the first games they won, they gambled away this lead by unnecessary defeats, and so it was only enough for fourth place in the end. The ups and downs dragged on through the following year, the women were further unsettled by a surprising change of coach, finally it was enough for 5th place.

Re-election and restructuring

After many years of activity, Hubert Greimer got tired of his office and in June 2010 the management of the association was handed over to Robert Hitzelberger. On July 1, 2014, the club entered into a syndicate with LUV Graz Damen under the name DFC LUV Graz , which played in the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga and was dissolved again in summer 2017. DFC Leoben has been playing in the regional league again since the 2017/18 season.
