10,10'-oxybisphenoxoarsine - also OBPA - is an organic arsenic compound which is used as a biocide additive for plastics - especially soft polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyurethane (PU) . 200–500 ppm are already sufficient for good protection. Due to its toxicity, OBPA is only manufactured by Akcros and Rohm and Haas (today Dow Chemical ) and is increasingly being replaced by isothiazolinones , which are, however, highly sensitizing.
The compound was originally introduced as a fungicide in 1965 . Use in the European Union is no longer permitted. The import of OPBA-treated products has also been prohibited since 2016.
OBPA can e.g. B. be replaced by thiabendazole and an iodine-containing biocide such as iodocarb or diiodomethyl p -tolyl sulfone .
