action

Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia at the time before the first settlement by the Europeans: A young Aborigine , Dayindi, feels drawn to the wife of his older brother Minygululu. The brother is calm. During the framework story, a hunt for geese in a swamp using bark canoes , he tells him an old story that is also about a man who coveted his brother's wife.

Ridjimiraril, a warrior, has three wives. His younger brother Yeeralparil still has no wife and desires the third (youngest) wife of his brother. One day a stranger appears from a neighboring tribe. The tribe believes the stranger is evil and wants to steal their souls. Soon after, Ridjimiraril's second wife disappeared. Ridjimiraril suspects the stranger to have stolen her. When the stranger is spotted near the village again, Ridjimiraril sneaks up on him from behind and kills him by throwing a spear . However, the victim is the wrong man, another member of the neighboring tribe. Ridjimiraril hides the body, but not well enough, it is found. The brother of the victim identified Ridjimiraril as the perpetrator by means of the spearhead and accused him.

In order to prevent a tribal war, the elders pass a judgment according to old custom, according to which the tribe of the victim may throw spears at the perpetrator. His younger brother helps him with this. Ridjimiraril and Yeeralparil skilfully avoid the hail of spears, but in the end Ridjimiraril is struck in the stomach by a spear. The tribe of the victim withdraws, justice is satisfied.

The wound is not immediately fatal and Ridjimiraril can still return to his village. There he is cared for by his eldest wife and eventually dies of the consequences of the injury. While his body is being ceremonially prepared, suddenly his missing second wife appears again in the village. She says that she was kidnapped by another tribe that lives further away. She was able to escape from there, but was on the road for months to return home.

In the end, Yeeralparil takes his brother's widows as his wife, following tribal custom. However, he, who was only interested in the youngest woman, now has to take care of all three women.

Reviews

“The drama, which is as poetic as it is visually powerful, is told entirely from the perspective of the Australian aborigines, whereby things of daily survival are on an equal footing with the archaic love metaphor. The timeless film has the power of a Shakespeare drama and, with a lot of humor, manages to bring the Aboriginal thought and value system closer. "

"The deliberately comical aspects of his film contribute in a carefree and somehow natural way to the entertainment value of a very interesting work."

“This first Australian film, shot in the Aboriginal language, is unique: fascinating ethnographic observations, coupled with a plot that may, of course, frustrate some as an empty popcorn bag - because little happens. All the more beguiling the landscapes and faces that tell of life, love and the world. Dreamtime is what the Aborigines call their creation myth, and sometimes this film feels like a dream. "

“With '10 canoes, 150 spears and 3 women ', director Rolf de Heer tells an amusing and interesting anecdote from the historical life of the Aborigines. Unfortunately, he reminds his audience far too often that he actually wants to deliver a sophisticated work of art and that simply telling a simple story is obviously not enough for him. So in the end the film stretches out like chewing gum. "

"The ethnologically interesting film brings mythical stories of the Australian aborigines to life."
