12 Finger Dan (* 1978 in Bucharest , Romania ; real name: Dan Rosca ) is a Romanian-German DJ and music producer from Hamburg .

Life

Growing up in Bucharest, Dan Rosca moved to Hamburg with his family in 1983. In the late 1980s, at the age of 10, he first came into contact with hip hop culture . The music of the time by EPMD , Biz Markie , NWA , Public Enemy and Eric B. & Rakim had a great influence on him. In 1992 Rosca wrote his first rap lines in English under the pseudonym Hellraza , before he was accepted into the Enemy Crew (later Da Enemyz), a hip hop group from his circle of friends, a year later . When Rosca realized that the US group Sunz of Man also hosted an MC named Hellraza, Rosca changed his stage name to "Soulkrates". At the beginning of 1995 he discovered DJing and scratching for himself and produced his first mixtapes . A year later, Rosca learned B-Base, who u. a. with the Reimbanditen and Deutsche Reimachse on the Polydor label as a producer and DJ, in a workshop in the Haus der Jugend in Hamburg-Stellingen. B-Base produced some songs by Da Enemyz, and so Rosca got into music production with his support.

In 1999 Rosca ended his active career as a rapper and from then on was only active as a DJ and music producer. At the beginning of 2000 he changed his stage name again to First Dan, before in 2003 he adopted the stage name "12 Finger Dan", which was previously the final one.

In February 2005, B-Base and Rosca founded the DJ and producer team "Soulbrotha", which thematically dealt exclusively with soul , funk and boom-bap hip-hop . The first vinyl release took place in 2009 with the LP Collector's Item on which hip-hoppers like DJ Premier , Craig G , Sadat X , Kev Brown and a few more can be heard. This was followed in 2011 and 2012 by the Connexion EP and That's It EP together with P! Jay and a single from 2014, also in collaboration with P! Jay and the clothing brand Kingdrips from Hamburg.

Since 2010 Rosca produces the radio show backspin FM from Backspin Hip Hop magazine along with Niko sleeve, the managing director of backspin. At Backspin he also worked as a freelance editor from 2008 to 2013.

For a number of years Rosca has also been working as a sound engineer and has carried out some projects by hip-hop artists such as B. Craig G , El Da Sensei , DJ Koss , Billy Danze ( MOP ), Beneficence , Masta Ace and Edo G produced.

style

Rosca's musical style is shaped by the soul and funk of the 1970s. His productions are exclusively sample-based and can be classified in the boom-bap-hip-hop category. Some melancholy productions can also be heard on the albums of the rapper Albino. He prefers to produce with the SP1200 from E-MU. As a DJ he is active in the field of turntablism and has participated in several regional DJ battles.
