1999 is a song released in 1982 by the American musician Prince , which he wrote , composed , arranged and produced . The piece is included on his 1999 album and was released on September 24, 1982 as the pre-release single of the album. In the lyrics , Prince describes fears of nuclear wars .

history

1999 reached number 44 in the US hit parade in 1982. After Prince's popularity had risen in the US, returned to the US singles charts in 1999 in June 1983 and reached number 12 as the highest ranking.

The song was re-released a total of five times, including in 1984 in Great Britain as a double A-side along with the song Little Red Corvette . Only after its fourth re-release in the winter of 1998/1999 did the song make it into the German hit parade with number 86.

The background vocals were performed by three members of his backing band The Revolution : Lisa Coleman , Jill Jones and Dez Dickerson. Originally, Prince composed the song with three harmonies , but later decided that the voices would start on each verse.

On February 2, 1999 Prince re-released the song with his then backing band The New Power Generation , produced a total of six remixes and renamed it in 1999 - The New Master .

In 2004, the music magazine Rolling Stone ranked 212 of the 500 best songs of all time in 1999 .
