1nsane (or Insane ) is an off-road racing game from the Hungarian developer studio Invictus Games and was released in early 2001.

Game description

In 1nsane the player has the possibility to compete in various game modes with various terrain vehicles either as a single player against bots (campaign or fast race) or in multiplayer mode against like-minded people. There is no story.

The game offers an extended damage model so that, for example, in the event of a fall or collision, the body deforms and parts such as wheels or headlights come loose. Strong deformations usually have a major impact on the usability of the vehicle . However, the vehicle can be repaired at any time by pressing a button with a delay of 3 seconds.

If the vehicle tips over and remains on the roof, it can be turned around again at the push of a button. Should it ever get stuck or fall into a ravine, there is often no other choice than to be rescued with a penalty time of 5 seconds, whereby the vehicle is placed in a safe place on the map.

If you stay in deeper water for a long time, the engine cuts out after a short time. After 5 seconds you will be automatically rescued and placed at a dry point on the map.

cards

1nsane plays in about 30 varied environments, from archipelagos ( Hawaii ) to snowy mountains ( France , Wales ) to the lunar surface with lower gravity .

A special feature of 1nsane is that the square cards have no limit, but always repeat. For example, if the player drives over the level limit at the lower edge, he will find himself at the upper edge without any temporal or visual interruption. This becomes very clear on the map display in the game. Such a route can often be used as a shortcut.

vehicles

There are around 20 vehicles in the following five vehicle classes : 4x4 , sport , pickup , truck and extreme .

In addition to many common off-road vehicles of the first three classes, the fleet also includes trucks and more unusual vehicles such as an ATV , a police car or a rally vehicle .

In the vehicle selection, tuning specifications such as B. Select factory , offroad or race . In addition, more specific adjustments can be made via the User-defined menu item . For example, the steering, suspension and brakes can be adjusted.

Game modes

Off-road racing

The aim is to get to the finish line as quickly as possible over several laps of a given route. The route is determined by gates that serve as checkpoints.

Capture the flag

"Conquer the flag" is a racing game variant of the game mode Capture the Flag, which is widespread in first-person shooters . All opponents start together and try to capture the flag that is placed somewhere on the map. Anyone who picked up the flag by driving it over tried to return to the starting point in order to acquire a point. After the flag is picked up, opponents can steal it by ramming the corresponding vehicle. After every flag exchange, there is protection for a few seconds, in which the flag cannot be stolen, this is signaled by a transparent flag. The flag is clearly visible on the rear of the vehicle after it has been taken. Should a player tip over with the flag, it will be repositioned in the immediate vicinity. Vehicles with a flag are slightly slower than without. This often requires tricks such as evasive maneuvers to leave pursuers behind.

Pioneer

All checkpoints distributed on the map must be passed, the order is irrelevant. Whoever goes through them all first wins.

Goal hunting

Hunting goals is very similar to the game mode Groundbreaker, with the difference that after the first one has passed a checkpoint, it is deactivated for all others and the opponents therefore have to look for other ones in order to be able to increase their score. Whoever has the most points after deactivating all checkpoints wins.

Tohuwabohu

Many checkpoints are distributed on the map, of which only one is active at a time. Whoever crosses it first receives a point, after which another checkpoint is activated. The winner is whoever reaches the target number of points first.

Zone of destruction

There is a small, marked zone on the map and a target score. Points are obtained by staying in the zone or ramming other comrades-in-arms. The first to collect the target number of points wins. The difficulty is staying in the zone as long as possible without being pushed or rammed away.

Press coverage

The game has been recognized by several magazines, including Best Off-Road Game Ever , Best Debut of the Year in 2001 and Game of the Year in 2001 . In particular, the high fun factor and the multiplayer mode were praised, but several bugs in the original version were also chalked up. Even so, the game received good to very good ratings.
