Western Mediterranean
- After Pyrrhus withdrew from Sicily , Hieron II was appointed military commander in Syracuse .
- Battle of Beneventum between Pyrrhus and Rome . After this battle, Pyrrhus had to retreat to Epirus . Taranto remained largely on its own against the Romans and started peace negotiations. The site of the battle was previously called Maleventum and was now renamed Beneventum by the Romans . On the triumphal procession in Rome , elephants are presented for the first time in the city .
