Western Mediterranean

  • Pyrrhus puts together a fleet against Carthage in Syracuse , but the Greek cities of southern Italy are increasingly opposing him. He is wounded during the fight against the Mamertines in Rhegium . In Locri he loots the temple treasures to replenish his war chest and has the Syracusan politician Thoenon killed. Despite his victories against the Carthaginians in Sicily , he is forced to give up the siege of Lilybaeum and return to mainland Italy. His fleet is attacked by Carthaginian ships. Meanwhile the Romans take their winter quarters in the Samnite area .
