The 293rd Infantry Division was a major unit of the Army of the German Wehrmacht .

history

The division was set up on February 8, 1940 in Wehrkreis III in Berlin and Brandenburg as a division of the 8th  wave . In the western campaign , the division took part in the occupation of Belgium, the Channel coast and Nantes in France. In October 1940 she ceded the regimental staff of the IR 512 and the battalions III./IR 510, III./IR 511, III./IR 512 and III./AR 293 to the 333rd Infantry Division .

In June 1941 the division was involved in fighting at Brest-Litovsk , Pinsk and Gomel during the attack on the Soviet Union . During the war against the Soviet Union , the division was subordinate to Army Group Center ; it was not assigned to Army Group South until autumn 1943 . In November 1943 the division had to be completely disbanded after heavy losses at Uman , the remaining units were transferred to the 359th Infantry Division .

Willi Stoph served as a private in the Artillery Regiment 293 from 1940 to 1942 and became Army General of the NVA after the war and Minister of National Defense from 1956 to 1960.
