3-chlorobenzoyl chloride is an organic-chemical compound from the group of chlorinated, aromatic carboxylic acid chlorides . The compound is mainly used for the production of meta- chloroperbenzoic acid (mCPBA), which is used for the epoxidation of alkenes .
Extraction and presentation
3-chlorobenzoyl chloride is usually produced by chlorinating 3-chlorobenzoic acid with thionyl chloride or oxalyl chloride in the presence of dimethylformamide .
properties
Physical Properties
3-chlorobenzoyl chloride has a relative density of the steam-air mixture of 1.00 (density ratio to dry air at 20 ° C and normal pressure ). In addition, m -chlorobenzoyl chloride has a relatively low vapor pressure of approx. 0.5 hPa at 20 ° C.
Chemical properties
3-chlorobenzoyl chloride is a flammable, but difficult to ignite, liquid that is sensitive to moisture and therefore decomposes in water. m -chlorobenzoyl chloride is still difficult or very difficult to volatilize. Dangerous chemical reactions can occur with alkali or alkaline earth metals, alcohols, amines, bases, oxidizing agents, water, dimethyl sulfoxide and metals.
use
3-Chlorobenzoyl chloride is mainly used for the production of meta- chloroperbenzoic acid (mCPBA), which in turn is used for the epoxidation of alkenes and as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis.
safety instructions
Ingestion or ingestion of 3-chlorobenzoyl chloride can cause severe skin burns and serious eye damage. The ignition temperature is greater than 500 ° C. The substance therefore falls into temperature class T1. With a flash point of 110 ° C, 3-chlorobenzoyl chloride is considered difficult to ignite.
