4-methoxymethamphetamine (4-MMA for short; also para- methoxymethamphetamine, PMMA ) is a drug that, due to its structure, belongs to the phenol ethers and substituted amphetamines . It appears as part of ecstasy tablets .

synthesis

In PIHKAL the preparation is about from 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and nitroethane accessible Nitropropenderivat by reduction with lithium aluminum hydride described.

Pharmacological properties

PMMA is hardly entactogenic / empathogenic, but causes intoxicating symptoms in low doses and hallucinogenic symptoms in higher doses.

hazards

As with PMA, the effect of PMMA only sets in very late; its effect is not as strong as that of MDMA . This easily tempts the consumer to overdose. PMMA physically leads to an increase in pulse, blood pressure, body temperature and nystagmus . Overdosing can lead to vomiting, muscle cramps, breathing problems and, in the worst case, to organ failure, which can lead to coma or death. Several PMMA-related deaths have been reported since 2010.

Legal status in Germany

In the Federal Republic of Germany, PMMA is a non-marketable narcotic due to its listing in Appendix 1 BtMG . Handling without permission is generally a criminal offense. Further information can be found in the main article Narcotics Law in Germany .
