action

The lawless warrior Kai, who grew up as a foundling with forest demons, joins the samurai group " 47 Ronin ", which is led by Ōishi. They share a common goal: revenge on the insidious prince Kira. Kira used magic to induce the head of the samurai, Lord Asano, to commit suicide in order to restore his own honor, and with the blessing of the Shogun took his daughter Mika, who loves Kai, captive to gain weight after a one-year mourning period marry. But that's not all: With the death of the prince, the samurai group lost their status and they became ronin.
Now Kira rules the land without restrictions and oppresses the people. He is supported by the mysterious Mizuki, a witch. Kai sets off with the 46 samurai to Prince Kira's fortress to put an end to his disastrous reign, but on the way they await severe trials and dangers.

background

In December 2010, the studio mentioned that the film would be released in 3D format . Between March and April 2011, five Japanese actors were cast alongside Reeves. Universal Pictures picked these five to make the story a little more authentic, rather than casting actors who would be attributed to the United States. Universal provided the film with a budget of around $ 170 million.

Filming began on March 14, 2011 in Budapest . Origo Film Group also worked on the film. Production moved to Shepperton Studios in the UK. Additional shooting in Japan was also planned. Reeves said that some of the scenes in the film were originally filmed in the Japanese language to make the cast a little more familiar. The scenes were filmed one more time, now in the English language. The actors' costumes were designed by Penny Rose , who said:

“We decided to base the costumes on the culture, but we made a kind of fashion twist out of it. And we made it very colorful, which is actually quite unusual for me. "

The post-shooting was supposed to take place in London in the summer of 2012, but was delayed until late August 2012 due to the Olympic Games taking place at the same time . In retrospect, the studio added a love scene with a double to fuel Reeves' appearance in the film.

There are a few differences between the Japanese version of the film and the "Western" version in different tracking shots and extended scenes. Overall, there is a time difference of around two minutes and 30 seconds.

Production and box office results

The cost of producing the film was around $ 175 million. According to several media reports, Universal Pictures wrote off the film and the production costs after several days as a flop , as it grossed only 22.3 million US dollars by the first weekend in the USA. In Japan, where the film first opened, it grossed just 105 million yen (€ 0.7 million) in the first two days, even though it was shown in 753 cinemas.

reception

The film received mostly negative reviews. The film holds a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 12 percent based on 65 reviews.

“Imagine if Hollywood wanted to re-film the Nibelungen saga. With huge effort and a high budget, which is why, in addition to a great tricked dragon, there would also be trolls, fairies and werewolves as an encore. And with an international star at Siegfried's side, who, however, would look much better and is the bigger fighter, who wins all the decisive battles as well as the heart of a lovely damsel [...] And so Reeves fights, loves and suffers at the forefront Front and degrades the 47 Ronin to a slightly kitschy decorative background. The Far Eastern legend and the Western blockbuster mentality by no means create a coherent whole. "

- Ronald Bluhm : The world

"Consistently dark, surprisingly authentic, but often emotionally chilled epic with fantastic show values."
