89 millimeters is a documentary by filmmaker Sebastian Heinzel , shot in Belarus from 2004 to 2005 .

content

The film describes the attitude towards life of six young Belarusians who are trying to find a way for themselves and their future after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The eponymous 89 millimeters are the difference in the gauge of the railroad tracks between Belarus and its western neighbors. Not a great distance and yet another world opens up on the border to the supposedly “last dictatorship of Europe”.

The director, who was only 24 when the film was made, is looking for the people in this country. He concentrates on the question of how a dictatorship manifests itself in daily life and what it does to people. In everyday life, the author observes how young adults of his generation shape their lives. During five stays of several weeks in Minsk over the course of a year, a close familiarity developed between the film team and the protagonists, which the viewer can feel in the intimacy of the recorded situations.
