Since then, Sinema has also won the 2014 and 2016 elections and is therefore also a member of the current 115th Congress . She has announced that she will not apply again for this seat in the upcoming 2018 , but will run to succeed Republican Jeff Flakes in the United States Senate , so that this Congressional constituency will be represented by another person by January 3, 2019 at the latest.

Republicans consider this constituency to be one of their best opportunities to win a seat in the 2018 election following the elector's withdrawal. Several candidates ran for election as early as September 2017, including 2016 candidate Dave Giles and former Navy officer and doctor Steve Ferrara. On the Democratic side, the mayor of Phoenix , Greg Stanton , announced his candidacy; he is considered a favorite to win the 2018 election. In the 2016 presidential election , Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton had a 17 percent lead over Donald Trump ; Obama won here by four percentage points in 2008 and 2012. However, the political orientation of the electorate is largely balanced; 33 percent are registered as Democrats, 31 percent as Republicans, and 35 percent as Independents.
