The Panzerspähwagen AEC ( English AEC Armored Car ) was a British armored car in World War II , which was developed on the basis of a truck.
development
The vehicle was built without an official order from the British bus manufacturer Associated Equipment Company (AEC) on the basis of information that became known about the fighting on the North African theater of war.
AEC used the chassis of the Matador truck, modified it for the purposes and put a heavily armored superstructure with the turret of a Valentine tank with its 2 pounder cannon on top .
variants
- AEC Mk I with Ordnance QF 2-pounder
- AEC Mk II got a 3-man turret with an electric traverse and a 6-pounder cannon (57 mm).
- AEC Mk III carried an American 75mm tank gun of the M3.
The AEC had either two or four-wheel drive and steering of the front wheels. However, its high profile and angular appearance were negative, which made it difficult to camouflage when exploring. The AEC should support the lighter Daimler and Humber . He was later used in Italy and by Yugoslav partisans. Some later went to Belgium. The total production of all models was 629 pieces.
