The AEG C.IV was a German reconnaissance aircraft belonging to the Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft , aircraft construction department, Hennigsdorf ( AEG ).
AEG began building aircraft in Hennigsdorf in 1910, and after the outbreak of World War I in 1914, it produced military machines for the German Army and the Imperial Navy . The works airfield was in the south-west of the Teufelsbruchwiesen of Nieder Neuendorf .
After the first unarmed reconnaissance planes AEG BI , B.II and B.III , the need to arm the reconnaissance aircraft became apparent in 1915. The answer to this requirement came in March 1915 in the form of the CI , a two-seater armed reconnaissance aircraft with a 150 hp (112 kW) Mercedes D III in -line engine . It was basically a B.II with a movable machine gun.
In October 1915 AEG brought the improved C.II out. It was smaller and lighter and therefore more efficient. An experimental C.III soon followed. It was characterized by a voluminous fuselage that filled the entire space between the upper and lower wings. The purpose of this design was to give the crew an unrestricted view to the front and to enable the shooter seated in front to be able to fire forward past the propeller circle. Despite this solution that made sense at the time, the sample did not go into production.
The most elaborately constructed model and at the same time the most important representative of this series was the C.IV, which had a Mercedes D.III in-line engine and a permanently installed, forward-firing synchronized machine gun MG 08/15 and a 7.9 mm Parabellum MG Received on turntable at the observer seat. The setting angle of the horizontal stabilizer could be changed on the ground. The development was pushed forward very quickly, as the German squadrons urgently needed an armed reconnaissance aircraft. Overall, the C.IV was slightly larger than the C.II, but essentially had the same design.
The AEG C.IV.N was a night bomber that differed from the AEG C.IV in terms of the engine and the span of the three-stemmed wings. The aircraft was built as a prototype in 1917. This model had a holding device for six 50 kg bombs .
Over 400 copies of the C.IV were made. The C.IV became the N.IV-night bomber with increased wingspan developed and increased engine power, the two-seater CV -Aufklärer and C.VIII.Dr - triplane version , however, were only prototypes .
The JI infantry aircraft was later derived from the C.IV.
