The 11th Asian women's soccer championship was held in the PRC from December 5th to 14th, 1997 . The venues were Guangzhou , Panyu and Zhaoqing (all in Guangdong Province ). China won for the sixth time in a row after beating North Korea 2-0 .

There were no qualifiers for this tournament. The eleven teams were divided into two groups of four and one group of three. Within the preliminary round groups, each team plays each other once. The group winners and the group runner-up with the best points reach the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reach the final, the semi-final losers play for third place.
