Abdallah

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abdallah (also Abd-Allah or Abdullah ; Arabic عبد الله, DMG ʿAbd Allāh ) is a male, Arabic given name and is made up of Abd and Allah , d. H. 'Servant' or 'Servant of God'. The name is common throughout the Islamic world. Men who convert to Islam often add Abdallah to their name.

The term Abd-Allah or Servant of God is not a specifically Islamic term. It can already be found in Jewish and Christian theology as a title for the Messiah . The term was used in particular by Syrian Christians for Jesus Christ . The Latin expression for servus Dei is servus Dei . Since Pope Gregory the Great as Servus servorum Dei ('servant of God's servants') it has also been the official self-designation of the popes.

The formation of the name is analogous to those of Punic names with the same meaning - such as Abdmelqart servant of Melkart (German form: Hamilkar ). So the expression Abd ( Arabic عبد) “Servant”, “servant” or “slave” had been part of the name throughout the Orient long before Islam.
